Behind every 3D concrete printing system lies one defining choice: where the control over the material lives. In the mix itself (1K), or in how the process is managed (2K). Understanding this difference is the key to choosing the right technology.
1K, or one-component printing, uses a single pre-formulated mortar, pumped and printed as is. Everything depends on the material's own chemistry: it alone must be fluid enough to pump, yet stable enough to hold its shape and bear the layers above.

This makes 1K simple to set up and well suited to prototyping, research and standard geometries. It is the technology that built much of the early 3D concrete printing industry.
Its limits appear at scale. There is no way to adjust the material during printing, so any variation in the chain can compromise the whole print. It depends heavily on specific, often costly formulations. And the heights and shapes you can print are constrained by the mix's open time, the window before it sets.
2K, or two-component printing, combines a base material with a liquid accelerator, activated on demand at the nozzle, just before the concrete is extruded. The base material stays simpler, more affordable and more flexible; the accelerator gives real-time control over when the concrete sets.
This distributes the intelligence between the material and the process, and it changes what is possible: real-time adjustment during the print, reactivity to any drift without a domino effect, reduced dependence on a single costly formulation, and geometric freedom no longer limited by open time.
These are the properties that matter for structural elements, complex geometries, tall vertical prints and industrial production, where reliability is non-negotiable.
1K is a reasonable entry point for simple, standard prototyping. But for industrial and structural work, the ability to control the process in real time is decisive. As the technology matures, the direction of travel is clear: toward digital control and flexibility rather than dependence on a single fixed formulation.
